Looking for a Copywriter? Make Sure You’ve Got 4 Things in Place First
I was on a Zoom call with a physical therapist who ran a year-old practice.
She said she was looking for a copywriter because marketing stresses her out.
In other words, she didn’t have a marketing strategy, or goals, or distribution strategy.
Chances are, you’re a little more established than she was.
BUT as you might guess, while this therapist needed help...but she wasn’t ready for a copywriter.
I recommend having four things in place before you hire a copywriter:
#1: Basic knowledge of your audience
Doesn’t have to be perfect, but you should have a sense of who’s buying your product and why
#2: Details about your product or service
That includes guarantees, deadlines, etc.
#3: A distribution channel or strategy
Once you’ve got the copy, where are you planning to distribute it? How often?
#4: Clear expectations or goals
What kinds of outcomes are you hoping to see? How will you gauge whether or not your copy’s working?
Obviously, both you and the copywriter want success.
Better have a sense of what that looks like.
Anyhow, that’s how you’ll know it’s worth hiring someone.
In the case of the physical therapist, she had numbers 1 and 2. But she was completely unsure about 3–4.
Too soon.
And if that’s about where you’re at, it’s probably too soon for you.
Now, that being said, hiring a GOOD copywriter could be an excellent business investment.
You might not have all the answers yet.
A good copywriter will help you think them through.
S/he can help you sketch a basic business plan.
Just be aware that you’re going to get a lot of questions, and they’ll anchor around the four things I listed.
